On Wednesday, May 21, Decorah High School students participated in STEM Connect: a hands-on learning event designed to showcase how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are used in the real world.

Students engaged with representatives from a wide variety of organizations, including J B Holland, Winn Med Rehab & Sports Medicine, Geothermal Eco Options (G.E.O.), Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), Luther College, Iowa Rotocast Plastics, Collins Aerospace, the Decorah Fire Department, Mayo Clinic Rochester, Charles City FRC Team, the Iowa DNR, Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, DroneXperts, Winneshiek Energy Development, and Decorah EMT. Each offered interactive activities that demonstrated the practical applications of STEM in their industries.

The event was coordinated by Shannon Quandahl, Facilitator of Instructional Technology for the Decorah Community School District, who aimed to bridge classroom learning with real-world experience. With support from Maddie Putnam-Keck, Project Coordinator for Winneshiek County Development and Tourism, the team connected with local and regional businesses to bring this unique opportunity to life.

STEM Connect lived up to its name—giving students a chance to explore cutting-edge technologies and career paths while forming meaningful connections with professionals in STEM fields. Ninth grader Anastasia Leibold remarked, “I thought it was really fun because there was so much there. The drones were cool, and the simulations were really fun!”

“Events like STEM Connect are exactly what rural communities need to spark interest in local career opportunities and build long-term connections between students and the industries around them,” said Maddie Putnam-Keck. “It’s amazing to see our schools and businesses come together to show students that they don’t need to leave the area to find meaningful careers because they’re already here.”

Organizer Shannon Quandahl remarked, “It is incredibly rewarding to see a vision come to life, and this success would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of many. I would like to extend a special thank you to Brad Hurst, Adam Riley, Liz Fox, Allysen Lovstuen, and Maddie Putnam-Keck, along with all the high school teachers, staff, and students who made the event possible. Another highlight of the day was the connection formed between our high school students and the youngest learners at John Cline Elementary. Through a shared reading experience, STEM-based activities, and time spent together at recess, students of all ages engaged in a joyful and enriching exchange. This unique collaboration created an opportunity for mentorship, curiosity, and meaningful interaction across school buildings. Thank you to Mr. Varney and the entire John Cline teaching team for embracing this idea and helping make it a reality.”

Quandahl added, “STEM Connect Day truly reflected the power of community, creativity, and connection. It was a fantastic way to celebrate learning and close the school year on a high note.”

President of G.E.O. Larry Leliefeld commented, “The students presented themselves well, with interest, interaction, and good questions. We look forward to this event again in the future!”
