Steps for a Stranger: Community Walk and Play Date

Saturday, March 07, 2026
10:00 am

You're invited to join local families and friends for the first annual “Steps for a Stranger” community walk and park playdate in Decorah, Iowa. The walk invites Winneshiek County residents together to stand against child exploitation and abuse while raising awareness about the prevalence of this issue and highlighting the helpful resources that are available in our community.

The event will kick off with playtime at 10:00 AM at Carrie Lee Elementary School Park at 210 Vernon Street. A community walk will start at 10:30 AM and will follow a sidewalk route through town to Mary Christopher Park on East Water Street.

Attendees are encouraged to bring colorful and supportive signs that uplift the rights of children to safety and security. At Mary Christopher Park, attendees will be invited to join a community group photo and to enjoy snacks and refreshments and another playtime. Strollers and little walkers are welcome!

"We are looking to make Decorah stronger, one step at a time. This is a difficult subject to talk about, but we need to speak up and be the examples that our children deserve. We are here to raise awareness about child abuse and exploitation, and to equip our neighbors with the resources that they can use to prevent abuse and support children.”

– Hunter McGee, Decorah parent

We hope this will build upon the success of our first event on February 14th. We'd like to continue hosting events throughout the spring in community with local schools, nonprofits, and the city. We hope to see you on Saturday!
