Mrs. Holthaus deserves recognition for her kind heart and the positive energy she brings to Decorah High School each day. From the moment students walk into her classroom, she is often the first to greet them with a friendly “hey” or a quick joke that immediately puts them at ease. Her classroom is a place where students feel seen, respected, and comfortable asking questions—about the lesson at hand or anything else on their minds. As a Health and Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Holthaus brings energy, clarity, and purpose to her work each day. While no two class periods feel exactly the same, students consistently leave her class having learned something new and feeling better than when they arrived. That combination—high expectations paired with approachability and warmth—is a hallmark of her teaching and a big reason students connect so strongly with her. Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Holthaus has dedicated many years to Decorah High School as the head volleyball coach, investing countless hours in mentoring student-athletes and helping them grow as competitors, teammates, and young adults. Her work ethic is exceptional, and she consistently goes above and beyond for students, colleagues, and programs—yet she does so with humility, kindness, and a sense of humor that never fades. A few weeks ago, she announced her decision to step away from that role, a choice made with the same thoughtfulness and care that has defined her leadership, leaving behind a program that is well-structured, deeply rooted, and positioned for continued success. Among a staff filled with outstanding educators, Mrs. Holthaus stands out for her unwavering commitment to students and her ability to balance hard work with heart. She is a trusted teacher, a respected coach, and a daily reminder of the positive impact one dedicated educator can have on an entire school community.
