Equity vs. Equality

To better understand equity in education, it is important to understand the difference between these two terms:

  • Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.
  • Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome

One of our core values at Decorah Community School District is Equity and Well-being: We believe equity and well-being ensure a safe learning environment, a sense of belonging, and student success. Our commitment to equity suggests that we are determined to remove the barriers to learning that students experience and implement the necessary accommodations each student needs in order to be successful.
